Thus, there is a 83.63% chance that this person
would choose Accounting as their major and
83.5% of this estimation is correct.
Disscussion
The above results determined that the highest
factor of note is the employment demand for
the accounting industry. Presently, Vietnam is
undergoing an important phase of economic
development and intergration, especially within
the ASEAN. This in turn caused a significant
impact on the accounting industry, as the
companies has been progressively focusing on
accountancy. Besides, the already high demand
is further supported by an increasing number
international companies coming to Vietnam,
together with the labor rotation needs among
ASEAN countries. However, universities would
need to pay attention to the outcome of their
education, so that their students would be able to
meet with higher skill requirements in this era of
intergration.
In the other hand, the unique characteristics of
accountancy also proved to be a factor attracting
and affecting students’ decisions. As the students
consider accounting to be helpful in developing
themselves, their creation and their reputation
among the business world and society as a whole;
they would become more likely to determine
accounting as their future career. Finally, although
the students’ own thinking capabilities were not
shown to have a large impact on their decision
to study accounting, those who have higher
intelligence would have an advantage when
taking this major.
Conclusion and Recommendation
According to the results of the study, there
are five major factors affecting students’ decision
to choose Accounting as a major including:
Communication and Labour demand (β=1.944),
Personal characteristics (β=1.27), Family members
and peers (β=1.243), University characteristics
(β=0.708), Job characteristics (β=0.455). From
above it is evident that the factors related to
Communication and Labour demand are the
most influential on students’ decision as to which
major they will study in universities and colleges.
From the aforementioned results, the authors
recommend that universities and colleges should
first focus on presenting their school and course
information via media platforms such as websites
or forums, as well as proving to their potential
students the current state of job demand for the
Accounting – Auditing industry. Besides, the
universities also need to work closely with high
schools and families to find out what are the
actual needs and interests of students, in order
to create an education environment most suitable
for them to enjoy their university lives.
